Over the previous 2 weeks, we participated in 2 junior tournaments. This period is the busy period for junior tournaments in Malaysia and there are plenty of tournaments happening, some times concurrently! The junior tournament scene is alive and well. Let’s discuss.
Over the weekend, we went for the Haier Cup Junior 2025 tournament. This is a junior tournament where there are no restrictions on the participants. Even junior state players or junior national players are allowed to participate. We saw players from as far as Denmark, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. There might be more from other countries, but we did not encounter them in person.
The competition was fierce as there were many top players from the country who were present. We saw many familiar faces, children who were competing in the local tournament scene whom we have faced or met in other tournaments.
I will be doing a write up on the website about the Haier Cup Junior 2025. I am realizing how difficult it is to get information from one source on junior tournaments. I have to curate information from many sources in order to get as many tournaments as possible. I will be compiling that information on the website here:
Tournament information is time sensitive, and there is always an enrollment dateline. When the tournament is publicised, there is usually a window of 3 weeks before registration closes. This makes keeping track of tournaments extremely difficult.
Some of the larger tournaments sponsored by major brands have an advantage here as they have larger marketing budgets to spend on social media and traditional media. But even then, the time window to decide on joining a tournament is small and requires rapid responses.
More popular tournaments can have their slots fully booked in 2 hours! I experienced this when attempting to book for the Daikin International Badminton Championship. It was fully book in 2 hours and the website crashed! We could not access the website after 2 hours from when the registration was opened.
On Tuesday, 22 July, we went for the MSSD tournament which was held in Michael’s Badminton Academy. More details on the tournament here on this page:

Several months back, we went for the Allianz Junior Badminton Championships in Taiping, Perak. The Allianz tournament is arguably the largest non government junior tournament in Malaysia as it spans 6 to 7 months and covers 10 locations across as many states in Malaysia. More details on this tournament on this page:
Local Tournaments
There are some smaller tournaments which are not as well publicised available too. The challenge is finding out about these tournaments. More details on this page:
Facebook helps as there are dedicated Facebook groups on badminton tournaments in Malaysia. But Facebook is an imperfect tool for this as it is like a blog and older posts get pushed down. Some parties can drown out others by posting more frequently.
Due to this, I am thinking of inviting parties who want to have a webpage to host their tournaments to connect with me. I will gladly host the webpage for their tournament on the website. I am thinking of having a format similar to the pages I have created for Allianz Junior Badminton Championship and MSSM.
Some tournaments rely on posters on the badminton courts where the badminton academy operates. Other rely on word of mouth. All this is not very efficient and they struggle to attract sufficient players.
For those who are looking to gain experience, it is important to keep track of multiple channels. I do mine on the internet, the badminton courts where we frequent, and also through Facebook groups. There are plenty to choose from!
That’s it for this entry.
Until the next entry, eat well, get plenty of rest and keep the badminton going!
